Newton's Third Law: Action-Reaction Pairs — Homework

For every pair, name both objects involved and check that the two forces act on DIFFERENT ones.

  1. 1.A person pushes on a cart with 60 N. Find the force the cart exerts back on the person.
  2. 2.A swimmer's foot pushes backward on a pool wall with 400 N during a turn. Find the force the wall exerts on the swimmer.
  3. 3.Explain why a rocket can accelerate in the vacuum of space, where there is nothing outside the rocket to push against.
  4. 4.Identify the reaction pair to the statement "Earth pulls you downward with gravity."
  5. 5.Describe a real action-reaction pair from walking, swimming, or another activity of your choice, naming both objects and both forces.
