Piecewise-defined and absolute value functions — Homework

Check which piece applies before you compute -- write it down as a mini-step every time.

  1. 1.Evaluate f(x) = { 3x-2 if x<0 ; x^2-1 if x>=0 } at x=-3 and at x=2.
  2. 2.Using the same f, evaluate f(0).
  3. 3.Write |x+5| as a piecewise function.
  4. 4.Evaluate |x+5| at x=-8 using your piecewise rule, and check it against the definition.
  5. 5.In the first problem, explain why f(0) used the second piece and not the first.
