Solving radical equations — Homework

Isolate the radical, square both sides, then check every solution in the original equation.

  1. 1.Solve: sqrt(4x+5) = 5.
  2. 2.Solve: sqrt(x+3) = x-3, and check for extraneous solutions.
  3. 3.Solve: sqrt(2x+7) = 3.
  4. 4.Solve sqrt(5x-1) = -2. What happens, and why?
  5. 5.After squaring sqrt(x+3)=x-3 and solving, why must x=1 be rejected even though it solves the squared equation x^2-7x+6=0?
