Dividing polynomials — Homework

Set up the synthetic division box carefully, especially the sign of k.

  1. 1.Use synthetic division to divide x^3-7x-6 by (x+1) (note the missing x^2 term).
  2. 2.Divide x^3+4x^2-11x-30 by (x-2) using synthetic division; give quotient and remainder.
  3. 3.In the problem above, does (x-2) evenly divide the polynomial? How do you know?
  4. 4.Divide 2x^3-3x^2-11x+6 by (x-3) using synthetic division; give the quotient and remainder, then fully factor.
  5. 5.Why is a remainder of 0 in synthetic division the same information as "P(k) = 0" from the Remainder Theorem?
