Average atomic mass: the weighted average — Homework
Convert every percent abundance to a decimal before multiplying, and show both products before adding.
- 1.Neon has isotopes Ne-20 (mass 19.99 amu, 90.48%) and Ne-22 (mass 21.99 amu, 9.25%, ignoring a small third isotope for this problem). Estimate the average atomic mass using just these two.
- 2.Silver has isotopes Ag-107 (mass 106.90 amu, 51.84%) and Ag-109 (mass 108.90 amu, 48.16%). Find the average atomic mass.
- 3.Bromine has isotopes Br-79 (mass 78.92 amu, 50.69%) and Br-81 (mass 80.92 amu, 49.31%). Find the average atomic mass.
- 4.For the bromine problem, the two abundances are close to 50/50. What does that predict about where the average mass should fall?
