Proving lines parallel and the Parallel Postulate — Homework
For each situation, state whether the lines must be parallel, and name the converse theorem (or other fact) that justifies your answer.
- 1.A transversal creates a pair of corresponding angles measuring 76 degrees and 76 degrees. Are the two lines parallel?
- 2.A transversal creates a pair of alternate exterior angles measuring 101 degrees and 101 degrees. Are the two lines parallel?
- 3.A transversal creates a pair of same-side interior angles measuring 95 degrees and 90 degrees. Are the two lines parallel?
- 4.Line j is parallel to line k, and line k is parallel to line l. A transversal is perpendicular to line j. What can you conclude about line l, and what two facts did you chain together?
- 5.Explain in your own words why proving a converse theorem requires separate work from proving the original theorem.
