Solving right triangles: angles of elevation and depression — Homework
Draw the horizontal line at the observer before setting up each triangle. Round answers to one decimal place, and add observer height where it applies.
- 1.From a point 60 feet from the base of a monument, the angle of elevation to the top is 42 degrees. Find the monument's height.
- 2.A lighthouse keeper 120 feet above sea level sees a boat at an angle of depression of 18 degrees. Find the horizontal distance to the boat.
- 3.A 5.5-foot-tall observer stands 25 feet from a flagpole and measures a 48-degree angle of elevation to the top. Find the flagpole's total height.
- 4.Two hikers are on a mountain trail. Hiker A, higher up, measures a 22-degree angle of depression to Hiker B. What angle of elevation does Hiker B measure looking up at Hiker A, and why?
- 5.A problem gives you one side and one acute angle of a right triangle and asks you to "solve the triangle." List everything you would need to find, and name the tool for each.
