Author Celebration: A Year of Writing

Reflect on growth as a writer across the year and share a favorite piece in an author celebration, as the final checkpoint.

You have written opinions, informational reports, and true stories this year. This week is a celebration of everything you have learned as a writer.

Pick your favorite piece from the whole year to share, and think back on how much your sentences have grown since week 1.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Make this a real celebration -- a special snack, an audience of stuffed animals or family, even a homemade "author" certificate.
  • Pull out a piece from early in the year (the week 1 or week 9 checkpoint) to compare side by side with recent work.
  • Ask genuine questions about their favorite piece, the way a proud reader would, not a quiz-giver.
  • End the year by naming specific growth you noticed -- capitals that used to be missed, reasons that used to be vague, stories that used to skip the ending.
Talk about it:
  • Which piece of writing from this year are you proudest of, and why?
  • What is one thing about writing that used to be hard but feels easier now?
  • What do you want to write about next?

Mastery looks like: They choose and read aloud a favorite piece from the year and describe specific ways their writing has grown.

Common stumbles: Struggling to name specific growth without a side-by-side comparison to point to from earlier in the year.
