Checkpoint: Share with the Family Jury

Present a published opinion piece aloud to family members and answer a question about the reasoning, as a unit checkpoint.

This week you become an author giving a reading. You will read your published opinion piece out loud to your family -- your very own "family jury."

After you read, your jury gets to ask you one question about your opinion. Answering questions about your own writing shows you really understand what you wrote and why.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Gather real family members as the "jury" -- even a sibling or a stuffed-animal audience adds ceremony to the moment.
  • Ask a genuine, curious question about their opinion rather than a quiz question -- this is a celebration, not a test.
  • Reflect together on how far the writing has come since week 10's first "I like ___ because ___" sentence.
  • Keep this piece in a special folder or scrapbook as the first finished piece of the year.
Talk about it:
  • How did it feel to read your writing out loud to your family?
  • What is your opinion piece really about, in your own words?
  • What is one thing you want to try in your next piece of writing?

Mastery looks like: They read their opinion piece aloud clearly and answer a question about their own reasoning in a complete sentence.

Common stumbles: Rushing through the reading too quickly to be understood, or answering a question with just one word instead of a full sentence.
