Opinion Piece: My Favorite Book

Write a complete opinion piece (opinion, two reasons, closing) about a favorite book, applying the full structure independently.

Time to put the whole opinion piece together: an opinion sentence, two reasons, and a closing sentence -- four sentences in all, about your favorite book.

You have practiced every piece separately. This week you build the whole thing yourself, start to finish.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child write all four sentences with as little help as possible this week -- this is a chance to see real independence.
  • If they get stuck, point back to a specific earlier week (like the closing-sentence lesson) rather than giving the answer.
  • Read the finished piece aloud together, listening for whether it flows like one connected piece, not four separate sentences.
  • Celebrate finishing a real four-sentence opinion piece -- this is a big first-grade milestone.
Talk about it:
  • What are the four parts of your opinion piece?
  • Which part was easiest for you to write? Which was hardest?
  • Does your piece sound like one connected idea when you read it aloud?

Mastery looks like: They independently write a complete four-sentence opinion piece with an opinion, two reasons, and a closing.

Common stumbles: Skipping the closing sentence out of habit, or writing two reasons that overlap too much.
