Opinion Piece: The Best Season

Write an opinion piece choosing a favorite season and defending it with a reason, practicing the same structure with new content.

You already know the opinion-plus-reason pattern. This week you use it again with a new topic: which season is the best -- spring, summer, fall, or winter?

Defending your opinion means giving a reason strong enough that someone else might understand your thinking, even if they disagree.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Point out that this is the SAME two-sentence pattern as last week, just applied to a new topic -- noticing that connection builds confidence.
  • Ask "could someone else disagree with you and still make sense?" to introduce, gently, that opinions can differ.
  • Push past a first vague reason ("it is fun") toward one real, specific detail.
  • Let your child illustrate their favorite season alongside the two sentences if they enjoy drawing.
Talk about it:
  • Which season did you choose, and what is your reason?
  • How is this opinion piece like the one you wrote about pets?
  • Can two people like different seasons and both have good reasons?

Mastery looks like: They write an opinion-plus-reason piece on a new topic, reusing the pattern independently.

Common stumbles: Reverting to a vague reason after doing well with specific reasons last week -- the skill needs practice on each new topic.
