Opinion Piece: The Best Pet

Write a short opinion piece naming the best pet and giving one clear reason.

This week you write your first little opinion piece: which pet is the best? Start with your opinion sentence, then add one reason sentence that explains why.

Two sentences is enough for now: one that says WHAT you think, and one that says WHY.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child pick a pet they truly feel strongly about, even an unusual one -- real feeling makes for a stronger reason.
  • Have them say the two sentences out loud before writing, so the reason connects clearly to the opinion.
  • Resist adding your own opinion about the "right" pet this week -- the goal is their reasoning, not a debate.
  • If the reason is vague, ask "why" one more time to dig for something more specific.
Talk about it:
  • Which pet did you choose, and why?
  • Does your reason really explain your opinion, or does it just repeat it?
  • Would someone reading your two sentences understand your thinking?

Mastery looks like: They write a two-sentence opinion piece with a clear opinion and a specific, explanatory reason.

Common stumbles: Writing a reason that repeats the opinion instead of explaining it, such as "because it is the best."
