Opinions Need a Reason: I Like ___ Because ___

State an opinion and support it with one reason using the frame "I like ___ because ___."

An opinion is what you think or feel about something. "I like dogs" is an opinion. But a strong opinion needs a REASON, so people understand why you feel that way.

The frame "I like ___ because ___" is a simple tool. You name what you like, then tell why. "I like dogs because they are playful" tells both the opinion and the reason.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Model the frame yourself first -- say "I like ___ because ___" out loud about something real to you, so your child hears it before writing it.
  • Push gently for a real reason, not just "because I like it," which does not actually explain anything.
  • Accept any true, personal opinion -- there is no wrong answer for what someone likes, only a missing or present reason.
  • Have fun with silly topics too (favorite animal sound, favorite ice cream) to keep the frame low-pressure and playful.
Talk about it:
  • What is an opinion?
  • Why does an opinion need a reason?
  • What is one thing you like, and why do you like it?

Mastery looks like: They state a personal opinion and support it with one real, specific reason using the "because" frame.

Common stumbles: Giving a reason that just restates the opinion, like "I like it because I like it."
