Concert day: explain your instrument

Perform on your invented instrument and explain, using this unit's words, how it makes and changes sound.

This week you show off everything you learned about sound: a real concert. You will play your invented instrument for your family and explain how it works using this unit's big words: vibration, pitch, and loud or soft.

Explaining an idea out loud is one of the best ways to know you really understand it. A scientist does not just do an experiment -- a scientist explains it to other people too.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Be the audience: sit down, listen fully, and clap at the end like a real concert.
  • Ask your child to point to the vibrating part before they play, every time, to lock in the connection between vibration and sound.
  • Gently prompt with "what happens if..." questions if they get stuck explaining, such as "what happens if you loosen it?"
  • Celebrate the whole unit's ideas today -- vibration, pitch, and loudness -- instead of introducing anything new.
Talk about it:
  • What part of your instrument vibrates?
  • Can you make your instrument louder or softer, or higher or lower?
  • What was your favorite thing you learned about sound this unit?

Mastery looks like: They perform on their instrument and correctly explain, using the words vibration and pitch or loud/soft, how it makes and changes sound.

Common stumbles: Playing without explaining any science; forgetting which change, such as tighter or looser, causes which effect.
