Design your own instrument

Design and build an original instrument from household materials, applying what you learned about pitch and loudness.

This week you are the inventor. Using everything you know about vibrations, pitch, and loudness, you will design a brand-new instrument out of things from around the house.

A good instrument design uses a real vibrating part: a stretched band, a tight surface, or something you can strike, pluck, or blow across. Think about what will vibrate, and how you could change its pitch or loudness on purpose.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child lead the design; your job is safety and encouragement, not steering them toward one "correct" instrument.
  • Ask "what will vibrate?" before building -- it keeps the invention connected to real science, not just noise-making.
  • Help your child find at least one way to change the pitch or loudness once it is built, even if it takes a few tries.
  • Write down or photograph the design so it is ready to show off at the concert in week 9.
Talk about it:
  • What part of your instrument vibrates to make its sound?
  • How can you make your instrument play higher or lower, or louder or softer?
  • What was tricky about designing your own instrument?

Mastery looks like: They build a working instrument with an identifiable vibrating part and demonstrate at least one way to change its pitch or loudness.

Common stumbles: Building something that makes noise without a clear vibrating part; giving up after the first attempt does not work perfectly.
