Light lab review

Review and connect this unit's big ideas: seeing needs light, shadows, materials, reflection, and the Moon.

You have explored a lot about light this unit: seeing needs light, shadows form when light is blocked, some materials let light through and others do not, mirrors bounce light, and even the Moon shines only because it reflects the Sun.

Today you connect all these ideas together and show what you remember with a mini light-lab review, moving from station to station like a real scientist.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set up four simple "stations" around the house using the materials from earlier weeks, and let your child move through them like a lab.
  • Ask your child to explain each idea in their own words at each station before moving on -- explaining is how you check real understanding.
  • Do not introduce anything new this week; this is entirely about connecting what your child already knows.
  • Celebrate the whole unit: seeing, shadows, materials, mirrors, and the Moon are all one connected idea about light.
Talk about it:
  • Which light idea from this unit was your favorite to test?
  • Can you explain shadows and mirrors both using the word "light"?
  • How is the Moon connected to what you learned about mirrors?

Mastery looks like: They move through all four light stations and correctly explain each idea, needing light to see, shadows, materials, and reflection, in their own words.

Common stumbles: Mixing up which idea belongs to which station; being able to do the demonstration but not explain the reason behind it.
