Reading Stamina: Ten Quiet Minutes

Build reading stamina by reading independently and quietly for a sustained ten-minute stretch.

Stamina means sticking with something for a while without stopping. Runners build leg stamina; readers build reading stamina. Today the goal is reading quietly, by yourself, for a full ten minutes.

Pick a book that is just right for you -- not too hard, not too easy -- and a comfy spot. If your mind wanders, that is normal; just bring your eyes back to the page.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Help your child choose a just-right book: they should know most of the words with only occasional tricky ones.
  • Set a visible timer so the goal feels achievable and clear, not open-ended.
  • Sit nearby reading your own book so quiet reading feels shared, not lonely.
  • If ten minutes is a real stretch at first, start closer to five minutes and build up over the week.
Talk about it:
  • How did it feel to read quietly for ten whole minutes?
  • What made it easier or harder to keep going?
  • What book would you like to build stamina with next?

Mastery looks like: They read independently and quietly for a full ten minutes with sustained attention.

Common stumbles: Choosing a book that is too hard or too easy, which makes sustained quiet reading much harder.
