Ck and Double Letters

Read words that end in ck after a short vowel, and read words with double consonants (ll, ss, ff, zz) that make just one sound.

Short words with a short vowel sound often end in "ck," like "back" and "duck." The c and k team up to make one crisp k sound at the end.

Some words end with two of the SAME letter, like "bell," "miss," "huff," and "buzz." Even though you see two letters, you only say the sound once.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Point out that ck only shows up right after a short vowel sound -- that pattern helps your child guess new words later too.
  • Have your child count the letters but say the sound only once for double letters, so they do not try to say "l" then "l" again.
  • Collect a few ck words and a few double-letter words on paper and sort them into two lists.
  • Keep the pace playful -- these are quick, satisfying words once the pattern clicks.
Talk about it:
  • Why do you think back ends in ck instead of just k?
  • How many times do you say the sound in huff, even though there are two fs?
  • Can you find a double-letter word around the house?

Mastery looks like: They read ck and double-letter endings smoothly, saying the sound once even though they see two letters.

Common stumbles: Trying to sound out both letters of a double pair separately, like l then l again.
