Long-Vowel Review

Review and compare the long-vowel patterns learned this year, noticing that one sound can be written more than one way.

This week is a big long-vowel roundup. You now know two ways to make a long vowel: silent e (cape, kite, hope, cube) and vowel teams (rain, tree, boat, night, sky).

Some sounds even have more than one way to be written. Long a can be a_e (cape) or ai/ay (rain, day). Long i can be i_e (kite), igh (night), or y (sky). Noticing more than one way to write the same sound is a big reading skill.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Make a poster or chart together listing every long-vowel pattern learned this year, sorted by vowel.
  • Play a quick game: say a long-vowel word and ask your child to name which pattern it uses.
  • Remind your child that good readers expect more than one way to write the same sound in English.
  • Keep review sessions short and varied rather than one long drill.
Talk about it:
  • What are the two big ways to make a long vowel sound?
  • Which long vowel has the most different patterns you know?
  • Why might a sound have more than one way to write it?

Mastery looks like: They name multiple ways to write a given long-vowel sound and read words in any of the patterns correctly.

Common stumbles: Assuming every long vowel must use a silent e, even when a vowel team is the actual pattern.
