Checkpoint: Silent-E Words Cold

Show automatic, accurate reading of silent-e words across all five vowels, without hints.

Another checkpoint week! This time it is all about silent e. You will read words with a, e, i, o, and u, cold -- no hints first.

If a word trips you up, that is useful information, not a problem. It just shows exactly what to practice a little more before moving on.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child read each word without a hint first; offer a hint only after a genuine attempt.
  • Note any vowel, a, e, i, o, or u, that needed extra help so you know what to revisit.
  • Keep the tone warm and low-pressure -- this is a snapshot of progress, not a graded test.
  • Celebrate every word read cold and correct, especially the ones that were hard a few weeks ago.
Talk about it:
  • Which silent-e vowel felt the most automatic today?
  • Was there a word that surprised you by being easy?
  • What is one silent-e word you are proud of reading cold?

Mastery looks like: They read silent-e words across all five vowels accurately without hints.

Common stumbles: Reverting to the short-vowel sound under pressure, even on a word practiced many times.
