Sorting Silent-E and Short-Vowel Words

Sort words into short-vowel and silent-e long-vowel groups by checking the end of the word for a final e.

Now you get to be the sorter. Every word either has a short vowel sound (cap) or a silent-e long vowel sound (cape). Check the end of the word for a silent e before you decide.

One quick trick: look at the very last letter first. If it is an e, look at the vowel two letters back -- it probably says its own name.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Make two columns on paper labeled Short and Long, and sort a mixed pile of word cards together.
  • Teach the check-the-end-first habit -- it is faster than sounding out the whole word to decide.
  • Mix in a few tricky pairs on purpose (hop, hope; cut, cute) so the sort is not too easy.
  • Have your child read each word out loud as they sort it, not just glance and guess.
Talk about it:
  • What is the first thing you check to sort a word?
  • Which pair was trickiest to sort today?
  • How does checking the end of the word save you time?

Mastery looks like: They quickly and correctly sort words as short-vowel or silent-e long-vowel by checking for a final e.

Common stumbles: Sorting by the look of the word instead of checking specifically for a silent e at the end.
