Silent E with I: Kit to Kite

Extend the silent-e pattern to i_e, reading words where a silent e makes the i say its own name.

The silent-e trick works with every vowel. "Kit" has a short i. Add a silent e -- "kite" -- and the i says its name: "eye."

Same rule as last week, new vowel. Cover the e, read the short word, then add the e back and let the vowel change.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Keep using the cover-the-e trick from last week -- it works the same way for every vowel.
  • Let your child hear both words in a pair out loud so the vowel change is obvious by ear, not just by eye.
  • Point out this is the SAME rule as a_e, just a new vowel -- naming the pattern builds confidence.
  • Mix in a few a_e words from last week so the two silent-e patterns do not feel separate.
Talk about it:
  • What sound does the i make in kite?
  • How is the i_e rule the same as the a_e rule from last week?
  • Can you turn pin into a silent-e word?

Mastery looks like: They read i_e words with the long i sound and connect the rule back to a_e as the same pattern.

Common stumbles: Reading the word with a short i and ignoring the silent e at the end.
