Year-end math fair

Demonstrate a full year of math growth by presenting a favorite strategy or concept from the year.

Congratulations -- you finished a whole year of first-grade math! You have learned addition and subtraction strategies, tens and ones, telling time, measuring, and fractions of shapes.

This week is a math fair: pick your favorite thing you learned this year and get ready to show someone how it works, step by step, like a real teacher.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child choose the topic for their math fair -- ownership makes the explaining more meaningful.
  • Have them teach YOU the skill, step by step, as if you had never seen it before.
  • Ask real questions during their "presentation" to check understanding, not just to be polite.
  • Mark this as a celebration -- a whole year of real mathematical thinking is worth honoring.
Talk about it:
  • What math skill are you most proud of learning this year?
  • What was tricky at first but feels easy now?
  • What math skill are you most excited to learn next year?

Mastery looks like: They confidently explain and demonstrate a math strategy from the year in their own words.

Common stumbles: Choosing a skill they cannot yet explain clearly; rushing through the explanation without showing each step.
