Fourths: four equal shares

Partition a shape into four equal shares, called fourths or quarters, and connect fourths to halves.

Splitting something into four EQUAL shares gives you fourths, also called quarters. Each of the four matching pieces is called "one fourth."

A fast way to make fourths: cut something in half, then cut each half in half again. Two halves, cut again, make four fourths.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Fold a paper square in half, then in half again, and unfold to reveal four equal boxes.
  • Use real food again, like crackers or tortillas -- fourths from food are memorable and fun.
  • Connect back to halves: fourths are what you get by halving the halves.
  • Check every fourth against the others by overlapping them, just like with halves.
Talk about it:
  • How many fourths make a whole?
  • How are fourths related to halves?
  • Can you fold paper into fourths and show your steps?

Mastery looks like: They create and identify four equal fourths and explain the connection between fourths and halves.

Common stumbles: Making four pieces that are not all equal; forgetting that two fourths together equal one half.
