Mixed o'clock & half-past reading

Read and distinguish between o'clock and half-past times on mixed clock faces.

Now you will see a mix of exact o'clock times and half-past times, in any order. The first check is always the long hand: pointing at 12 means o'clock, pointing at 6 means half past.

Once you know which kind of time it is, read the short hand the right way: right on a number for o'clock, or between two numbers, using the earlier one, for half past.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Shuffle between o'clock and half-past times so your child cannot just guess based on a pattern.
  • Keep the two-question routine: where is the long hand, then where is the short hand.
  • Use a real clock throughout the day and ask for quick time-checks.
  • Celebrate every correct read -- telling time is a genuinely grown-up skill.
Talk about it:
  • What do you check first to know if it is o'clock or half past?
  • How do you read the short hand differently for each kind of time?
  • What time is it right now, really?

Mastery looks like: They correctly read and tell the difference between o'clock and half-past times on any clock.

Common stumbles: Reading the short hand before checking the long hand; guessing instead of checking both hands.
