Doubles: 2+2 through 9+9

Recall doubles facts from 2+2 through 9+9 fluently.

A doubles fact adds a number to itself: 2 + 2, 5 + 5, 8 + 8. Doubles are some of the easiest facts to learn because there is only one number to think about.

Once you know a doubles fact, you know it forever -- it never changes. 6 + 6 is always 12.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use pairs of matching objects -- two hands, two shoes, two eyes -- doubles are everywhere in real life.
  • Make a doubles poster together and quiz from it in short bursts.
  • Point out that every doubles answer is an even number.
  • Say the doubles in order (1+1, 2+2, 3+3...) out loud to build automatic recall.
Talk about it:
  • What is special about a doubles fact?
  • Are doubles answers always even or always odd?
  • Can you name a doubles fact just from real life, like two hands?

Mastery looks like: They recall all doubles facts from 1+1 through 9+9 instantly, without counting.

Common stumbles: Confusing a doubles fact with a near-double, like 4+5; slow recall on the bigger doubles such as 7+7, 8+8, and 9+9.
