Checkpoint: solve & explain a story problem

Solve a variety of word problem types and explain the reasoning.

This checkpoint pulls together every kind of story problem you have learned: result unknown, change unknown, comparison, and two-step. The math itself is not new -- the skill is picking the right plan.

Before solving, ask: what do I know, what am I looking for, and does this need one step or two? A clear plan makes any story problem manageable.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Mix all four story types today, and ask your child to name the TYPE before solving.
  • Keep insisting on reading the whole story before any numbers are touched.
  • Let your child explain their plan out loud before writing a single number.
  • Frame this as proof of a full year of story-problem growth -- it is a big deal.
Talk about it:
  • How do you decide if a story problem needs one step or two?
  • What is the difference between a change-unknown story and a comparison story?
  • Which type of story problem is your favorite to solve?

Mastery looks like: They identify the type of a word problem, make a plan, and solve it correctly with a clear explanation.

Common stumbles: Solving without a plan; mixing up a comparison question with a change-unknown question.
