Two-step story challenge

Solve a two-step word problem by completing one action, then using that result for a second action.

Some stories need two steps. Figure out what happens FIRST, solve that part, then use your answer to solve the SECOND part. Go slowly and do not skip a step.

After solving, check: does the final answer make sense for the story? If the question asks how many are left and your answer is bigger than you started with, something went wrong.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Have your child tell the story back to you in their own words before touching any numbers.
  • Require them to say "first..." and "then..." out loud, one step at a time.
  • Cover up the second sentence of the story until step one is fully solved.
  • Always finish with the sense-check question: does this answer make sense for the story?
Talk about it:
  • What is the first thing you look for in a two-step story?
  • Why do you need the answer from step one before doing step two?
  • How do you check that your final answer makes sense?

Mastery looks like: They solve two-step word problems by completing each step in order and checking the final answer.

Common stumbles: Trying to do both steps at once; using the original numbers for step two instead of the step-one result.
