Checkpoint: build & compare 2-digit numbers

Build, represent, and compare two-digit numbers fluently, showing understanding of tens and ones.

Checkpoint week! You have learned to bundle tens, build numbers with rods and units, count to 120, find ten more or less, compare numbers, and use a number line. Today shows how it all fits together.

Every two-digit number is just tens and ones working as a team. Once you see that, building, comparing, and counting all use the same idea.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Mix all the skills together today: build a number, say its neighbors, compare it to another, find ten more.
  • Let your child lead -- ask them to explain each step instead of showing them first.
  • Note anything still shaky, like bundling, comparing, or ten more/less, to revisit briefly before moving on.
  • Celebrate this as a real milestone -- two-digit numbers are now familiar territory.
Talk about it:
  • How do rods and units show what a two-digit number means?
  • What is the fastest way to compare two two-digit numbers?
  • What was the trickiest part of this unit for you?

Mastery looks like: They build, compare, and reason about two-digit numbers using tens and ones with confidence.

Common stumbles: Reverting to counting by ones instead of using tens; comparing ones before tens.
