Leaders and helpers

Identify leaders and helpers in the community and explain how each one helps a group.

A leader is someone a group listens to and follows, like a teacher, a coach, or a mayor. A good leader listens to the group and tries to help everyone.

A helper does an important job for other people, like a mail carrier, a crossing guard, or a firefighter. Leaders and helpers both make a community work better.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Talk through the leaders and helpers in your child's actual week: teacher, coach, principal, doctor, mail carrier, librarian.
  • If you pass a community helper this week (a firefighter, a librarian, a mail carrier), point them out and name their job.
  • Explain gently that a leader is not the same as "being bossy" -- a real leader listens to the group, too.
  • Ask your child what kind of leader or helper THEY might like to be someday.
Talk about it:
  • Name one leader you know. What do they do?
  • How does a leader help a group?
  • What is a helper's job?

Mastery looks like: They can name a real leader and a real helper from their own life and describe how each one helps a group.

Common stumbles: Mixing up "leader" with simply "the person who is loudest" or "the boss," rather than someone who guides and listens.
