Then-and-now picture sort

Sort items into then, now, or both across categories such as school, toys, transportation, and communication, explaining the reasoning for at least one.

This week you pull together everything you have learned about "long ago" versus "now." Things change over time in categories like school, toys, transportation, clothing, and how people talk to each other far away.

Some things belong ONLY in the past, some belong ONLY to today, and some things belong to BOTH -- they have not changed at all.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Gather a mix of real objects or pictures spanning several categories: school, toys, transportation, clothing, communication.
  • Sort them together into three piles or lists: then, now, and both.
  • For at least one item, ask "why do you think that changed?" or "why do you think that stayed the same?"
  • Praise careful reasoning over quick guessing -- the goal is thinking it through, not sorting fast.
Talk about it:
  • What is one thing that changed a lot over time?
  • What is one thing that has stayed the same?
  • Why do you think some things change and others do not?

Mastery looks like: They can sort multiple items correctly into then, now, or both, and explain their reasoning for at least one.

Common stumbles: Sorting by a quick guess rather than real reasoning, or forgetting that some things belong in the "both" category.
