First Grade · History · week 25

What makes a good citizen?

List several traits of a good citizen and connect each trait to a real action a first grader can take.

A good citizen is someone who helps their community work well. Good citizens follow rules, are honest, help others, do their own jobs, and treat people fairly.

You do not have to wait until you are grown up to be a good citizen. A first grader can already do every single one of these things, every day.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • List several good-citizen traits together: honesty, helpfulness, fairness, responsibility, respect.
  • For each trait, ask your child for a real example of it from THEIR OWN life, not just a definition.
  • Notice out loud, this week, whenever your child actually shows one of these traits in real life.
  • Connect back to earlier units: fairness (week 4), responsibility (week 3), and kindness (week 8) were all good-citizen traits in disguise.
Talk about it:
  • Name a trait of a good citizen.
  • Which trait do you think is hardest to practice?
  • How can a kid your age be a good citizen?

Mastery looks like: They can name multiple good-citizen traits and connect each one to a real, specific action.

Common stumbles: Naming traits only as abstract words, without connecting them to something they could actually do.
