Holidays and their heroes

Match at least three civic holidays to the person or reason each one honors.

Some holidays are not just days off -- they are days that honor real people or real events. Presidents Day honors past presidents, especially George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Veterans Day says thank you to people who served in the military. Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors Dr. King, who worked to make sure all people are treated fairly. Independence Day, on July 4th, celebrates our country's birthday.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Talk about whichever civic holiday is coming up soonest, and connect it to the person or reason it honors.
  • Look up a simple picture of Dr. King, George Washington, or Abraham Lincoln to make the "hero" feel like a real person.
  • Point out that some holidays honor a group of people (like veterans) rather than just one person.
  • Keep the facts plain and factual -- who or what is being honored, and why.
Talk about it:
  • Which holiday honors people who served in the military?
  • Who does Martin Luther King Jr. Day honor, and why?
  • What holiday celebrates our country's birthday?

Mastery looks like: They can match at least three civic holidays to the correct person or reason each one honors.

Common stumbles: Mixing up similar holidays, such as Veterans Day and Presidents Day, or forgetting the specific reason behind one.
