California symbols: poppy, quail, bear

Identify California's state flower, state bird, and state animal, and describe where each appears.

Just like the whole country has symbols, our state of California has its own symbols too. The state flower is the California poppy, a bright orange flower.

The state bird is the California quail, a small round bird with a curled feather on its head. The state animal is the California grizzly bear, which you can even see on the California flag.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look up pictures of the California poppy, the California quail, and the state flag together.
  • If poppies grow near you, look for them in real life -- they often bloom in spring.
  • Point out the bear on the California flag and compare it to the flag of the whole country from a couple weeks ago.
  • Ask your child to draw their own small picture of one California symbol.
Talk about it:
  • What is California's state flower?
  • What animal is on the California flag?
  • Why do you think California chose these particular symbols?

Mastery looks like: They can correctly name California's state flower, bird, and animal.

Common stumbles: Confusing California's state symbols with symbols of the whole country, such as mixing up the California quail with the national eagle.
