Home rules we choose together

Identify rules at home and explain the reason behind each one, understanding that families can make rules together.

Every home has rules, even if no one ever wrote them down. "Wash your hands before dinner." "Shoes off at the door." A good rule always has a reason.

Families can talk about rules together. A grownup usually decides the rule, but a kid can help by explaining how a rule feels, or suggesting a new one that would help everyone.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Sit down together and list three real rules from your home.
  • For each one, ask "why do we have this rule?" and write the reason right next to it.
  • Invite your child to suggest one new rule. Take the idea seriously, even if you do not adopt it -- practicing the thinking matters more than the outcome.
  • Point out that grownups follow rules too (traffic laws, workplace rules) so rules are not just "a kid thing."
Talk about it:
  • What is one rule at our house?
  • Why do we have that rule?
  • Would you add a new rule? What would it be?

Mastery looks like: They can name a household rule and state the real reason behind it, not just "because I said so."

Common stumbles: Confusing a rule with a punishment, or naming a rule without being able to explain its reason.
