Flag manners and meaning

Describe what the stars and stripes on the United States flag represent and name one respectful way to treat the flag.

The United States flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars. The 13 stripes stand for the first 13 colonies. The 50 stars stand for the 50 states we have today.

People show respect for the flag in simple ways: standing quietly when it passes by, and not letting it touch the ground. These are just polite flag manners, the same way we have manners for other important things.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • If you have a flag or a picture of one, count the stripes and stars together out loud.
  • Explain flag manners plainly and matter-of-factly, the way you would explain any other polite custom.
  • Mention that the flag has changed over time, gaining a star for each new state -- a nice link to how the country grew.
  • Keep this neutral and factual: this is a civics lesson about a national symbol, not about any one viewpoint.
Talk about it:
  • What do the 13 stripes stand for?
  • What do the 50 stars stand for?
  • What is one respectful way to treat the flag?

Mastery looks like: They can state what the stripes and stars represent and name a real, respectful flag manner.

Common stumbles: Mixing up which number goes with colonies (13) and which goes with states (50).
