Map expo

Present a map made this unit and correctly use map vocabulary (key, compass rose, symbol, land, water) to explain it.

This week is a map expo: a chance to show off the maps you have made and explain how they work, the way a real mapmaker might.

A good explanation uses real map words: key, compass rose, symbol, land, and water. Saying "this blue line is a river" is much clearer than just pointing.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Help your child choose one or two maps from this unit (the neighborhood map, the "get there" map, or the treasure map) to present.
  • Practice the presentation once together, coaching them to use real map words instead of just pointing.
  • Host a short, real "expo" for the family -- even just one other listener makes it feel real.
  • Ask a genuine question afterward, like a museum visitor would: "why did you put the park there?"
Talk about it:
  • What map words did you use to explain your map?
  • What was the trickiest part of making a map this unit?
  • What is one thing you would add to your map if you kept working on it?

Mastery looks like: They present their own map and correctly use map vocabulary -- key, compass rose, symbol, land, water -- to explain it.

Common stumbles: Using map vocabulary words without truly connecting them to their own map, rather than genuinely explaining their choices.
