Find California; find your town

Locate the United States, California, and their own town on a map, and state one true fact about California's location.

We live in a country called the United States of America, which is made up of 50 states. California is one of those states.

California sits on the west side of the country, and it touches the Pacific Ocean. Your town is a small dot somewhere inside California's shape.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look at a map of the United States together (an atlas, a puzzle map, or a map online) and find California's shape.
  • Point out that California is on the west edge of the country, touching the Pacific Ocean.
  • Find your own town or the closest big city inside California, even if it is just an approximate spot.
  • Practice the "zoom" idea: country, then state, then town, like the layers of an address.
Talk about it:
  • What country, state, and town do you live in?
  • What ocean is next to California?
  • What did you notice about California's shape or location?

Mastery looks like: They can point to the United States and California on a map and state that California is on the west coast, touching the Pacific Ocean.

Common stumbles: Confusing "country" and "state," or not yet understanding that a town sits INSIDE a state, which sits inside a country.
